Spend a day in the inland of Crete, exploring the rich Cretan culture. We’ll visit a medieval town and many traditional villages. We`ll see the oldest olive groves in the Mediterranean, see iconic historic sites, bake bread in a wood-fire oven, explore a monastery, and even hike through a gorge! Adventure awaits!

Your hinterland tour will begin with a wonderful scenic ride to a small village in the mountains. If that alone isn’t enough to tempt you, we’ll spend the morning in the yard of a house made famous through folklore, and we’ll also get to meet the owner and hear about life in 19th-century. As we continue our drive, you’ll see a side the beautiful hinterland and landscape of Crete.

Our next stop is the Monastery of Arkadi. Surrounded by striking natural beauty, and combined with a rich and prestigious history and numerous legends, this landmark of architecture will steal your heart. It is is perhaps the best known monastery on Crete due to the Holocaust of 1866. However, its location and impressive architecture make it all the more special.

In November 1866, Ottoman armies laid siege to the monastery, where 700 women and children and 260 Cretan warriors had barricaded themselves after the Abbot's refusal to surrender. After a two-day siege, the women and children and the warriors, led by Constantinos Yiaboudakis, entered the gunpowder magazine, set it on fire and blew it up, leading several Ottomans to their death.

Our next quest will be to get you acquainted with rural life — so roll up your sleeves as we teach you how to make and bake bread in a traditional Cretan household. While our breads are in the oven, we’ll have the opportunity to explore this remote region. With the help of a local, we’ll visit a quaint Byzantine church from the 11th century. We’ll also spend some time exploring the nature around us and learn all about Cretan flora. We`ll learn more about the Cretan herbs and their use in everyday life — from medicine to cooking!

Next we will explore an abandoned monastery, located in the heart of the Amari Valley. This Byzantine monastery flourished during the late Venetian and Turkish rule, but was turned into an agricultural school in the mid-20th century. You’ll feel like an Indiana Jones as we walk through the deserted rooms that were once full of life.

At this point you will be probably hungry. Do not worry, our transport will take us back to the village and you`ll have the chance taste your bread, some local products and a three course meal.

Our final adventure will be a hike through one of the greenest gorges you have ever seen. The spectacular, verdant gorge of Patsos is located in the inland area of the Prefecture of Rethymnon, at the north-west part of the Municipality of Amari. It is a beautiful gorge with a small river running through it. It has been developed for the visitors’ ease of walking, by the Forest Authority.

Though the day may come to a close very quickly, you’ll be left with a sense of appreciation for being able to experience a side of Crete that most tourists on the island are unaware of.
