Travelling in the ‘high lands’ of Minoan Crete

An 8-day tour on the most important "head-mountain minoan landscapes" at the eastern end of Crete (Sitia province of Lasithi). The density of the sanctuaries on the ridges of the eastern part of the island, has lead the archaeologists to the presumption that the “minoan sanctuaries” were first born in this place. The trip includes visits to almost all ridges of the region, while the visitor will learn basic aspects and facets associated with the Minoan cult on the mountains.  The travelers will have the opportunity to experience some of the most fascinating trails, of the bitten track, which at the same time are sites of utmost archaeological and mythological importance.

Archaeology, History: 8-day travel at the Minoan sanctuaries of Sitia guided by an archaeologist.

At the turn of the 3rd to the 2nd millennium BC, human presence was widespread on the island; there were people living at its two most extreme locations, namely, hill and mountain tops and caves. This strange custom of the people of that era is associated with numerous cultural innovations, which led to the establishment of great building complexes contemporary archaeologists call ‘Minoan Palaces’.

Visiting these extreme points of the versatile Cretan terrain (caves, peaks) and the apparent social reorganisation documented by the grand building complexes reflects dramatic shifts in the customs of island residents. Using the peaks, in particular, is related to various views about the relationship of the sky with the life-giving earth, as well as with the critical significance of such eminent ‘high positions’ shaping social cohesion in people’s daily life.

Hikers of the OURANOTHEN Programme, titled Travelling in the ‘high lands’ of Minoan Crete, will have the opportunity to visit the most important ‘Peak Temples’ while following the trails left behind by the Minoan civilisation phenomenon. The mountain outlines form a grid that organises and adds meaning to the landscape horizons, setting the scene for human activity. We propose tracking this scenery in pursuit of the meaning added to it by the ‘Sacred Sites’ on the peaks of the Cretan and more particularly, the Sitia landscape.
