Plaka Beach – Spinalonga

Plaka Beach – Spinalonga

Also available in English German French Italian Dutch Polish

Opposite the famous island of Spinalonga lies Plaka, a small fishing village which is 16 km from Agios Nikolaos and approximately 5 km from Elounda. In front of the village, there is a small beach sheltered from the winds, with white pebbles, clear waters and several tamarisk trees for shade – it is ideal for swimming and fishing. Plaka is a picturesque spot, with the cobblestoned alleys and excellent tavernas, where you can sample Cretan cuisine, as well as plenty of cafeterias and bars. There are plenty of accommodation options nearby, from top-rated resorts to intimate guesthouses and traditional bed and breakfast studios. The area has all the amenities you may need, including a couple of shops. A local community clinic can be found at Schisma (closer to Elounda), and is open to locals and visitors alike. While swimming at Plaka, you cannot miss the island of Spinalonga in the distance. The island surged in popularity after the success of Victoria Hislop’s novel, “The Island”, that is set in the village of Plaka and follows a family that lived here. Between 1903 and 1957, Spinalogka was a leper colony, and one of the last remaining in Europe after World War II. Today the island, with remnants of its spectacular Venetian fortress, is but in ruins, including the sanatorium and the church. During the summer season, there are regular boat tours to the island from Plaka, Elounda and Agios Nikolaos. The crossing from Plaka takes but a few minutes.

Plaka Beach – Spinalonga

One of the best beaches in Elounda, on the eastern side of the peninsula, is the beach of Kolokytha. If you can, try to visit early in the day or after the last boat departs. The waters are mesmerizing and incredibly clear and it is also a great spot for snorkeling. The beaches east of Elounda are characterized by their rugged and wild nature but are very much worth exploring as well. It is, however, best to use a 4×4 vehicle that can cross the occasional dirt road easily. If you prefer to head inland after spending all this time by the water, a short hike in the Gorge of Havga and a visit to the nearby Areti Monastery is an excellent option.
