Limanakia of Hersonissos is one of the most popular swimming spots for tourists in Crete. Located 26 km east of Heraklion, it is composed of a string of bays with white sand and blue-green waters that make up separate beaches, some popular and crowded and others offering a bit more privacy. The atmosphere is busy, but not as crowded or hectic as in nearby Hersonissos. The centre of the village has all the amenities and activities a visitor would need, including a large number of hotel complexes, rooms and apartments to rent, tavernas, restaurants, cafeterias, bars, banks, shops and a supermarket.

The westernmost of these bays is located close to the church of Agios Georgios. A set of steps leads down to the beach, where you find umbrellas and wooden platforms that people use to dive. There is a small section between the various coves and a little way off the above-mentioned spot, that is popular with nudists, even though it is rather close to the road. It is one of the few spots without umbrellas and sunbeds. A little past the nudist-spot, a small path leads to Sarandari beach. This is a small sandy cove, that attracts a lot of people eager to cool down in the refreshing waters.

Right beside it is another beach called Giofori. It is also well-organized with white sand and blue-green waters. Here, apart from umbrellas and sunbeds, you will find a full range of water-sports. Going east, you will meet other small coves where you can enjoy a swim. There are so many options you are guaranteed to find a spot that you enjoy to spend the day in. Further east, between the busy tourist hubs of Hersonissos and Malia, is the slightly less crowded Stalida beach. This is a great option for families with children. There are various other attractions in the area like the Aquaworld Aquarium & Reptile Rescue Centre, where visitors can interact and learn more sea life and different reptiles. Here we also find the Lychnostatis Open Air Museum, focused on natural history and culture. The museum showcases the cultural heritage, history and people of Crete island.
