Pervolakia gorge

Pervolakia gorge is an exceptionally beautiful gorge, with a fairly easy route stretching almost throughout its entire length that becomes challenging the further in you go.

It begins south of Pervolakia village and ends up at the lovely coastal area of Kapsas Monastery. It is almost 3 kilometres long in total and the elevation difference between the entrance and the outlet is approximately 350 metres. This trail is not suitable for children and proper footwear is required. There is no running water or springs within the gorge so make sure to come prepared.

The path is relatively well marked, with red arrows pointing the right way forward and stunning views. After exiting a gorge, a swim in the crystal clear waters of the Libyan Sea is highly recommended. The settlement of Makris Gialos, 10 km to the west, is a wonderful and remote harbour village with stunning sandy beaches and secluded coves that you can explore at your leisure. Makrygialos is one of the fastest-growing tourism destinations in the region of Eastern Crete. The main beach, known as Makrygialos beach or “Long Beach” is a great option, but you can also check out Lagoufa and Kalamokania beach. A plethora of secluded coves and small bays spread along the coast, giving you plenty of options.

For those pressed for time, or wanting to avoid too much climbing, descending from Pervolakia to the coast, is easier and takes about 1.5 hours. The ascending route is more challenging and will take at least 2 hours to complete, for inexperienced hikers. Pervolakia gorge is one of the rockiest gorges in the area, with sparse vegetation and it is also generally quite dry. This area of eastern Crete is one of the most remote and less visited by international visitors. In addition to its natural wealth in coastlines, gorges, hikes and charming traditional villages, visitors will enjoy the peacefulness and slow pace of life on offer.

During the summertime, there are cruises that depart from the village of Makris Gialos to the island of Koufonisi or you can charter your own private boat. This wildlife refuge and valuable natural habitat, spanning just 5.25 square km in size, is an untouched paradise and will reward visitors with its astonishing crystal clear waters.
