Museums of Crete

History and ancient civilization lovers will find their paradise in Crete, as they will have the opportunity to visit great archaeological sites, historical monuments scattered throughout the island, and remarkable museums that cover the whole range of its longstanding history, as they host rare finds from the prehistoric Minoan times until the recent years.

The whole complex of Arolithos is essentially an open-air museum. It was built to represent a small Cretan village, complete with houses, a church, a bakery, a blacksmith’s forge, a grain threshing floor, a raki distillery and a cafeneion, which were all constructed in the traditional Cretan architectural mode.

Toplou Monastery is a historical monastic centre which played a significant role in all struggles of the Cretans for freedom. In the museum, as well as in the museum shop and the church of the monastery, one can admire a part of the treasures that have been preserved by the monks during the centuries-old existence of Toplou.

The museum was founded in 1967 but was inaugurated in September 1993. It is housed in a building typical of the local traditional house architecture and occupies two levels. The modern museum way of exhibiting the existing material, helps to guide the visitor through the exhibits.

The museum is housed in a stone-built, recently renovated building, in a verdant area very close to Fodele village, where it is believed that the great artist El Greco (Domenicos Theotokopoulos) was born and lived before he left for Heraklion.

The Archaeological Museum of Sitia opened in 1984 and houses a significant collection, divided into four sections. The exhibits cover a period of approximately 4000 years, from the Final Neolithic era to the Late Roman period, and they are displayed in groups, according to the region and the site where they were excavated. Information is provided in five languages.

One of the most significant ethnological museums of Greece and the most important of Crete is located in the village of Vori, next to Phaestos. In the Museum of Cretan Ethnology, one can admire exhibits that represent the highest artistic expressions of the Cretan folk culture, from the 10th century until today, displayed in impressive unities.
