Museums of Crete

History and ancient civilization lovers will find their paradise in Crete, as they will have the opportunity to visit great archaeological sites, historical monuments scattered throughout the island, and remarkable museums that cover the whole range of its longstanding history, as they host rare finds from the prehistoric Minoan times until the recent years.


The Archaeological Collection of Ierapetra, open since 1986, includesfinds from the whole district of Ierapetra, dating from the Minoan period until the Roman years. It is housed in a building of 1899, in the town centre, known as the Ottoman School

Heading east of the city of Rethymnon and reaching the village of Margarites one arrives at one of the most important pottery centres of Crete. The exhibition was organized by the Cultural Movement of Margarites in co-operation with the Modern Pottery Study Centre of Athens.

The monastery of Kalyviani, which includes amongst others Cretan folk art workshops, is located close to the town of Mires, approximately 60 km from Heraklion.

The Archaeological and Folklore Collection of Myrtos is housed in a building handed over for the purpose by the Orthodox Church of Ierapetra and Sitia, and it has been open to the public since 2001.

The Waxworks Museum is located at the foot of Mount Psiloritis. It was founded on the initiative of the sculptor Dionisios Potamianos, who dedicated many years of work so that the 104 wax effigies were completed.

The ecclesiastical museum of the Preveli Monastery complex is housed in a renovated vaulted building of the Theologou Monastery. The collection, that is whatever has survived several disasters and looting over the years, includes objects from neighbouring monasteries, chapels and hermitages
